Opencard in general
What is Opencard? Opencard is a smart chip card intended for inhabitants of and visitors to Prague. It is issued by the Prague City Council. The card makes it easier for its holders to communicate with the city and makes for more comfortable and simpler access to the services provided by the Prague City Council and other partners of the Opencard project.
What can I use the Opencard for? Opencard can be used as a public transport ticket on Prague Integrated Transport. You can also use it for cash-free payment of parking charges at parking stations of Prague 1, 2, 3 and 7. The card also serves as a library card for the Municipal Library of Prague at all branches, including mobile libraries and as a library card for the National Technical Library. You can also use the Opencard to take advantage of many discounts which have been prepared for you at selected organisations and partners. More information here.
What do I need to get the card? These documents are necessary for arranging the issue of the card:
- application for issue of card (2×)
- agreement to the processing of personal data (2×)
- one photograph in passport format (35×45 mm)
- civic ID card, identity card for citizens of the EU (version of our civic ID card), citizens of other countries, passport and residence permit
All forms are available for download here and you can find them as hardcopies at all contact places.
What type of card can I apply for in the collection centre in the library? Only for a personal card with contactless chip issued in the standard period. You have to apply for all other types of cards in the Opencard Customer Centre at the Adria Palace.
Where can I apply for an Opencard? You can apply for a card at one of the contact centres or at the aforementioned 14 branches of the Municipal Library of Prague.
How much does an Opencard cost? The card with the contactless chip is free of charge.
anonymous card | 200 CZK |
card with contact chip | 300 CZK |
express issue of card (while you wait)) | 250 CZK |

How can I find out if my Opencard has been made out and is ready to be picked up? Definitely fill in column “contact” correctly. You will then receive a message to the contact which you specified telling you that the card is ready to be picked up. If you did not give a contact, you can ask about distributed cards on the Opencard information line. If you do not want to give contact data, have the card sent by post.
Can the library in some way influence the production and supply of cards? It cannot. The Municipal Library of Prague is neither the manufacturer nor distributor of cards from the manufacturer, it is merely a collection and issue point. Contact the Opencard information line with questions about production and delivery.
Can I pick up an Opencard for someone else? Yes, one person can pick up completed Opencards, for example, for all the members of a family at the same time without them having to be present personally. But for this you will need a power of attorney (notarial verification is not necessary) allowing the picking up of the card for the person for whom he is picking the card up, a copy of his or her civic ID card and copy of his or her request.
Can a child up to the age of 15 have an Opencard? Yes, but the legal guardian must submit the application for them.

Opencard in the library
What do I have to do if I want to use the Opencard as a library card? If you go to the library regularly, go to „your“ branch and say that you want to use the Opencard as a library card. If you are not enrolled in the library, go to any branch of the Municipal Library of Prague and have them activate the library service for you. For this you will need your civic ID card and CZK 60.
Does converting the library card to an Opencard change anything? The only thing that will change is the number of the library card. The password which you had on the card will stay the same, as will the state of your member’s account and Koniáš configuration.
I need the library card number for logging into Koniáš , to the book catalogue on the internet or for connection to wi-fi. Where do I find it on the Opencard? Before Opencard you used the number of the library card beginning with 248R…. If you have had your member’s account transferred to an Opencard, use the Opencard number, which is a sixteen-digit number below the photograph. When you write the number, write it without spaces. For members’ computers at the library, you don’t have to write out the number. All you have to do is place the card on the reader marked with the Opencard logo.
